At some time (the 23rd June 1939 to be exact) a former owner, a J.A.Gormley, has had a stamp made up "Stolen from John A Gormley". This has been embossed seven times in red ink..together with the date! Despite all this the is copy complete and highly technical. 12 pages of handwritten lecture notes loosely bound in.

Full page Frontispiece portrait Engraving of James Ferguson, together with a printed slip bound in, red ink.. "This work is illustrated with One Hundred and Fifteen Woodcuts, Representing the Various Inventions of Ferguson, and other Subjects Connected with His Life and Adventures". This copy worn, some gatherings loose. Top hinge weak. Bound in green buckram, Gilt lettering to spine and top board. 503 pp. Last page two inch loss, not affecting final page of Index. Owners inscription " William Upton, M.B.P.S., A.M.I.B.E., L.S.A., 19a Canal (?) St, Banbury. 1939". So..a good working copy of a scarce item. Dedicated to Sir David Brewster.

13. 15. [002149] Kelvin Association Copy. Electric Machine Design. John Wiley, 1906. This large book is by Horace Field Parshall & Henry Metcalfe Hobart. It is a revised and enlarged edition of "Electric Generators". The volume measures 24 x 28 x 5 cm and contains 575 pp. On the first free endpaper, inscribed in ink, it reads "Presented to the Rt Hon Lord Kelvin FRS, with my Compliments H F Parshall". Underneath in a frail hand is written "Recd March 30, 1906. Thanked same day. K. ". At this time he was Baron Kelvin of Largs. William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) died 21 months later, on 17th December 1907.

Fine Review Copy in similar DW. This book was reviewed for the magazine "Nature" by Hugh B Cott in 1972. This must be Cott's own copy sent by Nature, as we find enclosed a correspondence between Edward Phillips, a Nature Editor, and Hugh B Cott, Chairman, Crocoldile Group, Survival Service Commission IUCN. There is further corresspondence with Prof. A. d'A. Bellairs, and a printers proof of the Nature Revue is tipped in. This runs to 14 column inches and is titled "Crocodilians". There are several sheets of notes and the text is very lightly annotated in pencil throughout.

The boards are plain plum coloured with green paper spines. Vol 11 original spine label reads "Say's American Insects with Coloured Plates. Vol 11. $5. 1825". Vol 111 spine label reads "Say's American Insects with Coloured Plates. Vol 111. $5. 1828". Volume 1: Spine: label missing. 5% loss. Top board detached. Front free end paper torn with small loss. Second free endpapers inscribed "This work (three volumes only) was obtained for me by Mr Jeremy Humphreys from J.E. Stephereler (?) March 12. 1913. W.V.Evans". ..then " From the Library of the late Col. Wm Ewers of Somerset, Bemuda. J. A Russell. 1938". The title page is preceded by a tissue guarded engraving by C. A. Le Sueur "American Entomology". The title page is inscribed in a bold hand "The Property of the New York Hospital. No. 3307". Volume 11: Spine: 20% loss but original part retained and loosely inserted. . Volume 111: Spine: 10% loss. Top board detached with no loss. First free endpaper torn with no loss. Title page inscribed in black ink: "No: 3309 New York Hospital". All plates tissue guarded. We think this is as close to Say's manuscript as one can achieve.
